OHRID LAKE – One of the oldest and deepest lakes in the Balkans and whole Europe.
Covering 30 by 15 km, located on the Macedonia and Albania border. Ohrid Lake is an unique ecosystem, with many endemic species, taken under UNESCO supervision since 1979.
Despite its unique fauna and flora, what I liked the most is the atmosphere of this place- the location, the people, chill and not too much crowds…
OHRID LAKE was our stop on our BALKAN MOTORCYCLE TRIP. Nearly 200km south from Skopje, through steep mountain roads. Our one very wet day during 2-week road trip…
We arrived to Ohrid town soaked on our Transalp motorcycle on found lovely place with very hospitable family.
Of course we treated your host with our honey liqueur for a warmup and hospitality reasons and guess what? Our host also treated us with their pear and apricot liqueur as well 🙂 So this is how Ohid gave us a nice hello…
The view from our hosts home and garden was the best. We spent more time than planned in the area, because it was so peaceful and beautiful.
What to see in Ohrid Lake:
1. OHRID town
picturesquely set on hills by the Ohrid lake and is UNESCO’s both World Cultural and Natural Heritage site.
Old part of town by lake side is filled with many beautiful, old churches on hills.
Lake shore offers many cafes and resturants serving fresh Ohrid trout and wine.
It’s very romantic place with a spirit. No wonder so many people fall in love with this place.
During a day it’s also worth to pay a visit in new part of town to see how locals spend their day. We went for a walk up he hill to see some churches and views of the lake from higher perspective and ended up with a lunch in the fish market.
Coffee and some sweets in the afternoon was just what we needed while wondering around the town.
2. Bay of Bones – museum on water – a Prehistoric settlement.
Thousands of artifacts were found in the lake dating from the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age.
This reconstruction gives us an idea how people had lived here from 1200 to 600 BC.
